Full house refurbishment/ Basement extension/ 2 storey rear extension/ Detached Gym building

Hillstead

A comprehensive transformation of a prominent Victorian house, pairing refined contemporary interventions with a carefully composed ancillary building designed for future adaptability.

The original garage was replaced with a distinct single-storey gymnasium building, shaped to soften the transition in scale to the main house. Clad in stained black Redwood, it reads as a monolithic yet complementary form.

The existing house was comprehensively remodelled throughout to create a cohesive, practical and contemporary family home.

Our client’s brief was to extensively refurbish and extend the existing detached Victorian property, both internally and externally, alongside the creation of a separate gymnasium building capable of future conversion into a self-contained dwelling.

The two-storey rear extension establishes a strong dialogue between interior spaces and the rear garden. Arranged across split levels and centred around a dramatic double-height void, the plan introduces spatial dynamism and visual connectivity. A highly glazed rear façade allows daylight to penetrate deep into the plan, while a ground floor gallery and bridge extend to a glazed balcony overlooking the garden. A more secluded lower-level terrace is accessed from the Library and Study, offering moments of retreat. A structurally glazed link separates old and new, mediating the transition while enhancing daylight within the existing house.
