London Coliseum
This Grade 2* listed theatre – designed by Frank Matcham – was carefully restored and refurbished for English National Opera by Arts Team/ RHWL architects. During his employment at Arts Team, RSA director Miles Griffies was the zone architect responsible for the front-of-house areas. These areas underwent radical transformation brought about by the enlargement and re-design of the foyer spaces with improved circulation, a new box office, new bars and increased toilet facilities. A new foyer and bar was created at the Balcony level providing much needed space for patrons. This new level over-looks the Upper Circle bar and has views towards Trafalgar Square. These upper foyer levels are unified by the reinstatement of a glazed barrel-style roof which also enables dramatic views of Matcham’s restored tower. At the ground floor level a new staircase was created providing improved access to the much loved Dutch Bar in the basement.
